Allstate auto insurance review

Allstate offers strong loyalty perks like Accident Forgiveness and Deductible Rewards, but base premiums and claims satisfaction trail the field.

4.4 Customer rating
$89/mo Est. monthly
668/1,000 Satisfaction
All 50 states Coverage

Pros

  • Accident Forgiveness — first at-fault accident doesn't raise your rate
  • Deductible Rewards drops your collision deductible $100 every claim-free year
  • Drivewise telematics rewards safe driving with cashback, not just rate cuts
  • Captive agent network with about 10,000 local offices
  • Bundling with Allstate home, renters, or life products is straightforward

Cons

  • Highest average premium in our national sample ($89/mo)
  • 668/1,000 J.D. Power claims score is one of the lowest among mass carriers
  • Many loyalty perks (Accident Forgiveness, Deductible Rewards) cost extra
  • Drivewise raises rates for some drivers — opt-out matters in some states

Best for

Allstate is built for the long-tenure customer — someone who values bundle stability and loyalty perks more than chasing the lowest sticker. Accident Forgiveness, Deductible Rewards (your collision deductible falls $100 for every claim-free policy year, up to $500 off), and Safe Driving Bonus checks all reward years of clean driving. If you've been with one carrier for 8+ years and you'd rather have a captive agent and a stable household policy than save $20/month, Allstate is a coherent pick. It's also one of the better fits for parents adding teen drivers, because Drivewise gamifies safe driving in a way teens actually engage with.

Not for

If you're rate-shopping, Allstate is hard to recommend on price alone. Our sample average of $89/month is the highest among the eight mass carriers we track, and the 668/1,000 J.D. Power claims satisfaction score is also at the bottom of the pack. New customers without a long loyalty history don't yet benefit from the perks that make the brand sticky for tenured policyholders. Drivers in states where Drivewise is allowed to surcharge for hard braking or late-night driving should also read the program disclosures carefully before opting in.

Coverage options

Allstate covers the full standard menu — liability, collision, comprehensive, uninsured/underinsured motorist, and personal injury protection — and adds a strong list of optional coverages. Sound system coverage (up to $1,500), classic-car coverage, ride-sharing endorsement, rental reimbursement, and roadside assistance are all available. Gap insurance is sold for both leases and finance loans, and Allstate's "New Car Replacement" pays to replace a totaled vehicle less than two years old with a brand-new equivalent — one of the few national carriers offering that as a standard endorsement.

Discounts that actually move the rate

The discounts that actually compound on an Allstate quote: Drivewise telematics (up to 40% in some states, but watch for surcharges), multi-policy bundle with Allstate home or renters (typically 10-25%), multi-car (about 25%), early signing (up to 10% if you quote 7+ days before your old policy expires), pay-in-full (around 5%), and good-student (around 20%). Smart-Student / Resident-Student discounts apply to children away at college, and the Anti-Theft and Anti-Lock Brake discounts still exist on some state filings.

Claims experience

Allstate's J.D. Power auto claims satisfaction score of 668 out of 1,000 sits near the bottom of the mass-carrier field. The QuickFoto claims tool works well for minor cosmetic damage, and the captive-agent network gives policyholders a named human to escalate to — but recurring complaints involve disputed total-loss valuations and slow communication on injury claims. Drivers with strong agent relationships report a meaningfully better experience than those who rely solely on the call center.

Allstate vs. closest competitor

The cleanest comparison is State Farm, which runs a similar captive-agent model but beats Allstate on both price ($68/mo vs. $89/mo) and J.D. Power claims satisfaction (692 vs. 668). For drivers who like Allstate's Drivewise gamification but want a different vendor, Progressive's Snapshot does similar work at a lower base premium.
