Pros

  • 875/1,000 J.D. Power claims satisfaction — best in the industry by a wide margin
  • Lowest average premium of any major carrier in our sample ($52/mo)
  • Garaging discount for vehicles stored on base during deployment
  • SafePilot telematics with up to 30% safe-driving discount
  • One-stop shop: auto, home, banking, investments under one login

Cons

  • Eligibility is strictly limited — active-duty, veterans, and direct family only
  • If you're not military-affiliated, you cannot buy a USAA policy at any price
  • No physical agent offices — everything routes through phone or app
  • Rate increases after at-fault accidents are real, even with USAA's loyalty

Best for

USAA is the clear best choice for anyone who qualifies — and qualifying is the entire story. Eligibility is strictly limited to active-duty service members, veterans (honorably discharged), pre-commissioned officers, and the spouses and children of USAA members. If that describes you or your immediate family, USAA almost always wins on both price and service: it's typically 15-30% cheaper than Geico or Progressive on equivalent coverage, and its 875/1,000 J.D. Power claims satisfaction score is roughly 200 points above the next-best mass carrier. Frequent PCS movers, deployed service members, and military families with multiple vehicles benefit most.

Not for

Anyone without a military connection — there is no workaround. USAA does not sell to the general public, and policies are not transferable through marriage to a non-eligible spouse if the eligible member is removed. If you're not eligible, please don't waste time on the quote flow; Geico and State Farm are the natural alternatives. USAA is also a weaker fit for drivers who specifically want an in-person agent, since the carrier has no traditional storefront network.

Coverage options

USAA covers the full standard menu — liability, collision, comprehensive, uninsured/underinsured motorist, and personal injury protection where required — plus a few military-specific extras worth knowing about. Vehicles stored on a US military base during deployment qualify for a deep storage discount (up to 60% off comprehensive). Other add-ons include rental reimbursement, roadside assistance, rideshare coverage, and accident forgiveness after five years claim-free. USAA also writes classic-car coverage through a partner program, and gap coverage is available on financed vehicles.

Discounts that actually move the rate

Material USAA discounts: SafePilot telematics (up to 30%), multi-vehicle (around 10%), bundling with USAA home/renters (about 10%), good-student (typically 10% for full-time students with a B average), legacy / family member (around 10% for adult children of existing USAA members), defensive-driving course (around 3%), and the deployment storage discount mentioned above (up to 60% off comprehensive only). Loyalty discounts compound meaningfully — USAA's longest-tenured members consistently report some of the lowest renewal premiums in the industry.

Claims experience

USAA's 875/1,000 J.D. Power auto claims satisfaction score is the highest in the study, period. The differentiator is consistency: the mobile app handles photo claims fast, adjusters call back within hours rather than days, and disputed-liability cases are resolved with less friction than at any other national carrier we cover. The most common complaint isn't about claims service — it's about the eligibility wall, and the awkwardness of being moved to a different carrier when an eligible member passes away and a non-eligible spouse must shop elsewhere.

USAA vs. closest competitor

For non-eligible shoppers, the closest practical match on price is Geico ($58/mo average) and on claims service is State Farm (692/1,000) — though neither hits both targets the way USAA does for its eligible base. For service members shopping during transition out of the military, USAA membership is permanent once established, so it almost always pays to enroll while on active duty.
